BetHog shuts down July 31 to go all-in on Sentient Studios’ AI dealers

Three months after raising $10M to develop and sell AI-powered live dealers to other operators, BetHog is shutting down its sportsbook and casino. The crypto casino and sportsbook founded two years ago is telling users today that the platform goes dark on July 31. Customers have until then to withdraw their funds. All 16 of its product and engineering staff will move to Sentient Studios, the B2B spinoff producing AI dealers, along with the underlying technology.

Sentient Studios launched in April alongside BetHog's $10M Series A, built around Sunny, the AI blackjack dealer BetHog introduced in late 2025. Eccles' case for it has always run through the shortcomings of the real thing. "Do you ever play live dealer? They look miserable. It's not a fun experience… No one wants to play a game where you feel sad for the dealer," he told BettingStartups at the time. The surprise, he said, was who showed up: "There's a large number of people who like the concept of live dealer, but they just find it a little intimidating." Sunny, in his framing, is the "more comfortable" version.

The shutdown isn't a distress signal, according to Eccles. BetHog does “low 10s of millions” in handle monthly across sports betting and casino, and with continued investment, "would definitely be on the path to sustainability," he said. What it wouldn't be is the main event: "The real reason is we see a massive opportunity for Sentient Studio and we think to really deliver on it we need to focus." Of the roughly 20 employees, “around three people” from the marketing department will depart with BetHog.

The focus comes as the newfound category has started to see some competition. Octane Studios launched last week with a customizable photorealistic-dealer platform—baccarat first, blackjack and roulette to follow this summer—founded by a team consisting of iBankroll leadership, and pitched at operators, aggregators, game studios and streamers. Eccles expects more, and doesn't think distribution decides it. "What is going to win out is great technology and a deep user focus," he said. "If users don't love the games then it doesn't matter how many operators push it or how it is marketed."

Sentient has moved quickly on that front. Baccarat shipped a few weeks ago alongside Tong, a second dealer and native Chinese speaker. The avatars now lip-sync, hand-eye coordination is improved, and language support is up to 15. Tier-one operators have shown interest, with several expected to go live later this year, the company says.

Eccles laid out the ambition when we spoke in April: "Our north star is the best live dealer." He sees standard table games—blackjack, roulette, baccarat—going first, with AI set to "take over the bulk of the live dealer market."
